About 1,200 miles north of Toronto, the hamlet of Cape Dorset, Nunavut, is home to a multi generational community of Inuit graphic artists. Their cooperatively owned printmaking studios have been in continuous operation since 1959, producing unique, captivating, and powerful images. The animals and legends of the Arctic north come to life in the drawings and prints of Inuit artist Ningiukulu Teevee. Her work, inspired by tales she heard as a child, first appeared in Cape Dorset’s annual print collection in 2004. Since then she has developed into a prolific, versatile artist, exploring the traditions of the past with a contemporary touch. Twelve of Teevee’s inventive images are presented in this calendar.
